Stated Objective(s)
To be able to select a topic in which a graph (pie chart, bar graph or line graph) can be created. To be able to create an appropriate graph for a set of data. To be able to interpret and analyze information from a graph.
Procedures for Lesson
After spending 5 days going over different ways of organizing data and how to interpret information from a graph (pie chart, bar graph, line graph), students will create a graph using the http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph website.Students can choose any topic to research as long as a pie chart, bar graph or line graph can be created for it.Students will be given 2 or 3 days in class to create their pie chart, bar graph or line graph. Then, each student will present their graph to the class and give a brief description of it.In addition, each student needs to come up with a two question quiz about their graph.Every student needs to take the quizzes, and part of their final grade will be based on how they do on the quizzes.
Assessment or Evaluation
Students will get a single grade for this unit.Their grade will be based on ·the graph they created (75% of their grade) oPie chart – highest grade possible is C+ oSingle bar or line graph – highest grade possible is B+ oDouble bar or line graph – highest grade possible is A+ ·the two question quiz they created (10% of their grade) ·scores on the quizzes created by the other students (15% of their grade)
Enrichment
Students could make a triple or quadruple bar graph or line graph. Also, students could write two paragraphs describing another student’s graph and any trends or patterns that appear in the graph.
